A
sir,
I have the honour to forward for your informa-
tion the enclosed report of the Superintendent of the Victoria
Gaol for the year 1899.
2. The daily average number of prisoners con-
fined in the Gaol during the year shows a satisfactory decrease
compared with the figures for the year 1898.
The smaller average per prisoner of reports for
breaches of prison discipline is another satisfactory feature.
3. The building of quarters for the Gaol Staff
outside the prison is being rapidly proceeded with and will
be completed by the 30 th, November when the quarters now occu
pied by the Indian Warders will be available for use as a
Hospital leaving the present Hospital in turn to be used as
an extension of the Female Prison.
4. On the 1st, January 1899 the job printing required by Government and formerly carried out by a private firm, was transferred to the Printing Shop in the Gaol where it has been executed in a satisfactory manner during the year.
